ABOUT
An interesting path, an unexpected journey—

Woodblock printing has been my passion since undergraduate days at the University of Wisconsin. Ceramics and etching were appealing areas of study, but almost impossible to do at home. I preferred carving images onto pine boards, rolling on black ink, placing washi (Japanese paper) on top, and rubbing the prints by hand. Later, the field of costume history offered a new world of discovery. At UCLA, I studied costumes and textiles and the beautiful handmade cloth created by the artisans of Indonesia and Japan that have had a profound influence on my art.

I thrive on the creative process. Inspiration comes from many sources. The meticulous patterning in shibori enticed me to add indigo to my traditional black-and-white palette. Delicate sashiko-stitching sewn by dedicated women piecing together small fragments of cloth caused me to add yarn to my work. The creative re-use of fabric via collage has been especially satisfying. Combining scraps of batik fabric and washi has enabled me to honor the sophisticated work of artisans of the past as well as contemporary themes of recycling and conservation. Another burst of creativity is a non-loom weaving technique I use to combine wefts of paper, fabric and prints. Travel to Kyoto—the traditional crafts and paper-making area of Japan—was overwhelming. Watching paper being made by hand as it has been for generations was almost magical—and made me feel connected to the artists of the past.

My journey continues with exhibitions of my art in various Los Angeles area galleries.
